From the preface:
”Morven Museum & Garden is proud to present this exhibition celebrating the art and culture of Newark, New Jersey. At a time when art education is underfunded and undervalued, the story of Newark and its culture of art accessibility in the first half of the twentieth century can serve as a powerful case study. The citizens of this working-class city found themselves with an improbably front row seat to the budding modern art movement thanks to the intentional democracy of the Newark Museum and the publicly funded Newark School for Industrial Design. The connection between art, industry, and a healthy society is manifested in this exhibit, influenced by the revolutionary thinking of Newark Museum director John Cotton Dana, and through the work of students at the Newark School of Fine and Industrial art.”
