The exhibition consists of 69 modern prints made from the National Portrait Gallery's collection highlighting 150 years of African American resistance in the U.S. The exhibition was organized by the National Museum of African American History and Culture in collaboration with the National Portrait Gallery, the International Center of Photography in New York and the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service. "Let Your Motto Be Resistance" is based on the exhibition of the same name that features 100 original photographs. It was presented at the International Center of Photography in 2007 and the National Portrait Gallery from 2007–2008.
